Reflective Narrative
In SPAN 301, we improved our communication skills, both written and oral, through a series of activities based on Latin American literature and the current social issues of the Hispanic community. Individually, we selected a topic that we were passionate about to present it to the class which would be related to Latin America. In my presentation, "Refugiados de Centroamérica" (Refugees from Central America), I established a relationship between my arrival to the United States with the refugee crisis of the U.S. with the people of Central America. Since this issue was addressed as a humanitarian crisis in late 2018, I decided to show the pros and cons to discuss and relate the issue to our personal experiences to help us better understand the problem, which was one of the main objectives of this work. During my research, I discovered that the reasons behind the “migratory waves” originated from the historical intervention of the United States in the affairs of Latin America, a topic that we address in the courses of civilization and culture, as well as in some literary pieces of the Hispanic world. As for the linguistic aspect, we had a variety of works that helped us to improve our writing in Spanish such as my short story Libertad Eterna (Eternal Freedom) that addressed the homophobia in Syria, as well as my poem Rencarnación (Reincarnation) that talks about my pride of my cultural identity. Overall, this class helped me improve circumstantially my oral and written Spanish skills based on the current social issues and the role we play in solving them. After taking this class, I confirmed that I should continue doing creative writing as I perceived that I possess great talent. This class is related to SPAN 303.
