Spanish Tutoring at Hartnell College
My Service Learning site was in the department of Academic Support Services at Hartnell College. In specific, I served as a Spanish Supplemental Instructor (SI) Leader for college-level courses. My activities were primarily focused on Spanish grammar as well as some Latin American and Hispanic literature. My weekly sessions consisted of a brief lecture about a certain topic and activities especially designed to challenge their comprehension of the material presented. The purpose of supplemental instruction is to encourage individual and collaborative learning in order to develop a variety of academic abilities. These services are offered in certain historic challenging courses and are open to all students, free of charge. The purpose of helping this community is to foment the practice of oral and written Spanish as well as to familiarize students with Latin American as well as Hispanic literature. The performance of most of my students was awesome and was reflected on their actual tests. As a strong believer in the importance of sharing our academic and personal knowledge, I enjoyed every minute of service. At a personal level, this experience confirmed my goal to become a Spanish instructor an American university.
