Anthology of Hispanic Testimonials
Project Description
The goal and focus of the project is to edit and revise transcribed oral histories from the course SPAN 330 “Hispanic Testimonials” and compile these into an edited anthology for publication. Students will be collaborating have previously collaborated with the faculty mentor in producing an anthology of Hispanic Testimonios during the UROC Summer Research program, which discloses various issues of social justice and its intersections with race/ ethnicity, politics, gender, social class, among others. The continuing project will expand on the anthology will include a, as students will assist in compiling a theoretical framework for the critical introduction on testimonio as a literary genre by the faculty mentor, along with elaborating on additionally thematic units regarding social justice and testimonios of those Hispanics in Monterey County.
The technique and methods used to gather these testimonios include: transcribing pre-existing and additional audio recordings in Spanish, editing preliminary drafts of these oral histories, compiling supplemental audiovisual materials, and collaborating on the organization of the material in the form of an enhanced e-book.
My role will consist of providing previously acquired knowledge from undergraduate courses such as SPAN 330 “Hispanic Testimonials” in providing the historical context and theoretical framework that encompasses each of the testimonial narratives. Due to my language proficiency in Spanish, I would also be able to effectively support the editing and revision of the preliminary testimonials and their corresponding prologues, and make corrections and/ or modifications as needed. I believe additional skills I can contribute from my UROC Summer Research experience are project management, team leading, organizing and analyzing data, as well as technical abilities.
My future academic goals are to increase my knowledge of the components of Spanish linguistics such as listening, speaking, and writing through rigorous courses that connect Hispanic cultures with the various forms of oral and written communication. Through the exposition to testimonios from members of our community, I will be able to understand in depth the difficulties that minority students might have during their academic education. This project will allow me to acquire a better understanding of Hispanic testimonios, particularly in dialog with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of Monterey (2020). These historical narratives as testimonios allow us to share the stories of people who serve as an example of perseverance and commitment to reach social justice.
My career goals include working as a Spanish linguistics University professor, collaborating in research organizations that promote higher education among minority groups in the United States, and publish literary texts such as poems, novels, and short stories.
My contributions and participation in this project will help me academically and professionally as it will allow me to obtain experience in the process of research, collect quantitative and qualitative data, organize audio, digital and written testimonios in an anthology that addresses various forms of social justice in relation to characteristics such as race, gender, social class, citizenship status, among many others. Hopefully, during the process, I could acquire the knowledge of research methods in order to continue to investigate the role of minorities in the United States. As a first-time UROC participant, this project would help me to develop the necessary skills to attend graduate school and establish professional connections with others in my field. It will allow me to improve my critical thinking, technical, planning, communication (written and oral) as well as data collection and analysis skills.
