A Passion to Teach
One of the most important decisions of my life was to choose my major as I had several options that were related to my interests, personality and abilities. After taking into account a variety of factors, I opted to dedicate myself to become a Spanish professor at a community college and/or university. The reasons I decided to pursue a career in education are: love of teaching, my native language, and the relevance of culture around the world. In addition, I have always believed that all humans have a mission in life and mine is to positively influence everyone I work with such as students and teachers. A key aspect that has fueled my passion for teaching is the experiences I have had for three years as a supplemental Spanish instructor at the Panther Learning Lab of Hartnell College. The simple fact of perceiving the interest to learn more and the students' success motivates me to pursue my passion: la educación.
From this major I have learned that there is still much to learn. Certainly, during my instance at CSUMB I developed my skills and acquired more. In the language proficiency section, I improved my interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational communication. In the linguistics component, I learned the grammatical structure of Spanish and English, as well as the most effective teaching and learning methodologies. In literature, I learned to critically analyze the most relevant literary pieces of the Spanish-speaking world, as well as the most important historical periods of Latin American history. In the second culture section I was exposed to the culture, history and social problems of Japan with the purpose of expanding my cultural knowledge. In the cultural internalization and language immersion I had the opportunity to use my linguistic, literary and cultural knowledge for the benefit of an academic sector, as well as to highlight the relevance of access to education for all individuals. In the research and technology section, I acquired essential skills in the research process and was exposed to the full transition of virtual education. My professional goal of being a Spanish language educator never changed during my instance at CSUMB, it just became empowered to become an even more cherished dream.
Overall, I am very proud of everything I learned in my Spanish classes because they have made me grow significantly in the academic aspect. However, I would like to highlight my development in oral and written communication, specifically the research work I carried out in both Spanish and English. Likewise, I feel proud that I had the opportunity to apply my knowledge in community service. This made me reflect on the possible impact I would have as a teacher where I would have the opportunity to help more people. Finally, the realization of this electronic portfolio is another great achievement because I will always have a record of the academic and personal experiences that made me grow in all aspects. This project will undoubtedly be implemented during my next academic and professional stages.
Personally, I have always believed that I have many things that I have to improve academically. Intellectualism has never existed, only brilliant people that have attempted to achieve it. In my case, I still need to enhance my reading habit in order to acquire more literary and historical knowledge. In addition, I plan to take more linguistics classes because I want to be more acquainted with the theories of language learning and the teaching methods I can employ in my classes. Another of my major goals is to improve my English communication skills since I still have difficulties expressing myself in an academic context. Finally, I will take classes of another language (French, Italian or Portuguese) because it will help me to achieve my goal of obtaining a PhD in Spanish, either in linguistics or literature.
